What is Resurfacing Laser?

Laser resurfacing is a facial rejuvenation procedure that uses a laser to improve the skin’s appearance or treat minor facial flaws. It can be done with:

  • Ablative laser. This type of laser removes the thin outer layer of skin (epidermis) and heats the underlying skin (dermis), which stimulates the growth of collagen — a protein that improves skin firmness and texture. As the epidermis heals and regrows, the treated area appears smoother and tighter. Types of ablative therapy include a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, an erbium laser and combination systems.
  • Nonablative laser or light source. This approach also stimulates collagen growth. It’s a less aggressive approach than an ablative laser and has a shorter recovery time. But the results are less noticeable. Types include pulsed-dye laser, erbium (Er:YAG) and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy.

Is it for you?

  • Fractional laser treatments involve using a laser to create microscopic columns of untreated tissue in the skin, which helps to stimulate collagen production and rejuvenate the skin.
  • Fractional lasers were developed to shorten recovery time and minimize the risk of side effects compared to traditional laser resurfacing methods.
  • Laser resurfacing is effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines, improving skin tone, and enhancing complexion by targeting surface imperfections and stimulating collagen production.
  • However, laser resurfacing cannot eliminate excessive or sagging skin. It’s more suited for addressing superficial skin concerns rather than significant skin laxity.
  • Both fractional laser treatments and laser resurfacing can provide noticeable improvements in skin texture, tone, and overall appearance, but they have limitations in addressing certain skin conditions or concerns related to skin laxity.

Step

  • After surgery, it’s recommended to rest with your head elevated either in a recliner or with at least 2 pillows for the first 48 hours.
  • Taking prescribed pain medications before you begin to feel discomfort is advised, as it’s easier to prevent pain than to control it once it becomes severe.
  • Restricting activities on the day of surgery and for several days afterward is important to allow the body to heal properly and minimize the risk of complications or discomfort.
  • Following these post-operative instructions can help facilitate a smoother recovery process and promote optimal healing after surgery.

Post Care

  1. Ablative laser resurfacing involves directing an intense beam of light energy (laser) onto the skin.
  2. The laser beam targets and destroys the outer layer of the skin, known as the epidermis.
  3. Simultaneously, the laser heats the underlying skin, known as the dermis.
  4. This heating of the dermis stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that helps maintain skin firmness and elasticity.
  5. Over time, the stimulation of collagen production results in improvements in skin tone and texture.
  6. Ablative laser resurfacing is effective for addressing concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven skin tone.
  7. However, it typically requires a longer recovery time compared to non-ablative laser treatments due to the removal of the outer layer of skin.

Popular Questions

After ablative laser resurfacing, your skin might stay inflamed for up to several months. But once the treatment area begins to heal, you'll notice a difference in your skin quality and appearance. The effects can last for years. Results after nonablative laser resurfacing tend to be gradual and progressive

General tips. Don't wear makeup on the treated area until it's completely healed. Avoid exposing the treated area to the sun until it's completely healed. If you need to be in the sun, use sunscreen of at least SPF 50 or wear clothing or a hat that protects the treated area from the sun.

You'll have some redness and swelling. You may also experience itching or stinging for a few days after the procedure. Depending on the treatment, some people may have what looks like a severe sunburn.

In the hands of a highly trained, knowledgeable professional, laser resurfacing is a safe way to dramatically improve your skin's appearance. In the hands of a poorly trained individual, lasers can be ineffective or even dangerous
